Abstract
Ergonomics, a discipline focused on designing and optimizing human interactions with work environments, plays a critical role in ensuring workplace safety, efficiency, and overall well-being. The impact of poor ergonomic practices on employee health has been well-documented in various industries. Musculoskeletal disorders, including back pain, neck strain, carpal tunnel syndrome, and tendinitis, are among the most common health issues associated with ergonomic hazards. Beyond physical discomfort, these conditions can lead to reduced productivity, increased absenteeism, and significant healthcare costs. Furthermore, prolonged exposure to poor ergonomic conditions can result in chronic pain and
long-term disabilities, affecting not only the employees but also the overall functioning of the workplace. A qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews was used to collect data from 30 workers at Handyman’s Lime Company Limited in Masaiti, Copperbelt. Participants were recruited through purposive sampling, and interviews were conducted face to-face. Data was analyzed using thematic analysis. The study found that workers at Handyman Lime in Masaiti are exposed to multiple ergonomic risks, including heavy lifting, awkward postures, repetitive motions, and prolonged static positions, which contribute to physical discomfort, fatigue, and occasional declines in productivity. Workers’ lived experiences highlighted that proper ergonomic interventions, such as adjustable workstations, cushioned seats, and accessible tools, significantly improved comfort, performance, and focus. However, implementation of ergonomic improvements was hindered by budget constraints, management prioritization of production over worker comfort, resistance to change, and lack of awareness or training. The study’s qualitative findings and workers’ narratives point to a workplace with clear, modifiable ergonomic risks that are already constraining health and performance. Importantly, the workforce’s own examples of where ergonomic improvements produced immediate benefits provide a practical roadmap: begin with low-cost, high-impact fixes, combine them with administrative reforms (task rotation, breaks), and use participatory pilots to build management commitment and a phased investment plan. these steps would likely reduce MSD risk, improve productivity, and deliver a positive return on investment for Handyman Lime Limited.
