Determining the prevalence and factors associated with work stress at the National Assembly of Zambia, Lusaka

Abstract

Work-related stress is a significant global occupational health challenge that impairs employee well-being, productivity, and organizational effectiveness. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of work stress and identify the key associated factors among employees at the National Assembly of Zambia in Lusaka. A quantitative, descriptive cross-sectional study design was employed, utilizing a structured self-administered questionnaire. The study instrument collected data across critical domains, including perceived job demands (e.g., heavy workload and long hours), levels of job control and social support, specific sources of stress (such as political pressure, deadlines, and poor communication), and the impact of stress on mental health and work-life balance. Findings are expected to reveal a measurable prevalence of work stress within this public service environment. The subsequent analysis of associated factors is anticipated to highlight significant relationships between high stress and variables such as excessive workload, lack of supervisory support, and limited autonomy in job execution. The results will provide empirical evidence necessary for the National Assembly to design targeted occupational health interventions, specifically recommending the implementation of formal stress management and employee wellness programs to foster a healthier and more productive working environment.
